As the son of his pack's Alpha, and his father's successor, Jensen is expected to mate and produce pups. As he's nearing 30, his pack is getting nervous that he might never meet his match. One day, when he's venturing onto human land for supplies, he finds his mate.

Jared is fully human, but reminds Jensen from the start of an overgrown pup. He's funny, clumsy, and Jensen longs to tangle his hands in his mate's floppy hair. The scent of his mate drives Jensen wild, but he knows that he has to proceed with caution to avoid driving the human away.

He begins venturing into human territory more often, and woos Jared with thoughtful small gifts. It's killing him to take things slow, but Jensen adamantly believes that Jared is worth it. His pack, however, feels differently. While it is possible for a human to turn into a were, Jensen's pack has been "pure" for many generations, and the thought of their future Alpha marrying a weak human makes some protest loudly with disgust. Not deterred in the least by their negative feelings, Jensen continues to court his mate, and gradually his relationship with Jared moves from friendship to romance.

Jensen is beginning to consider proposing to his love. One day, he's visiting Jared at his store when the place is held up in a robbery. There are multiple gunmen, far too many for Jensen to take on even in his wolf form, so he has no choice but to watch helplessly while Jared complies with their commands and turns over the cash register money, safe money, ect. The robbers take valuables from the other customers, searching pockets and purses for anything of value, but when they get to Jensen he freezes. He can't empty his pockets because the ring he intends to use to propose to Jared is in there. He doesn't want to ruin the surprise or lose the ring, which has been in his family for generations. He hesitates, just for a second, which is all that the impatient robbers need to lose patience. They aim, but before they can fire Jared's shoving him out of the way, taking the silver bullet that had been meant for Jensen.

Jared's badly injured, but slowly he recovers. Impressed by the bravery that the human showed, Jensen's pack hunts down the robbers to reclaim the ring, making them pay dearly for hurting the Alpha's soon to be mate. The last naysayers, who thought that a human was too weak to help lead their pack, finally are convinced that they were wrong. Happy ending with a wedding preferred!
